TRI=NITRO – Yoshihito Nakanishi & Katsufumi Matsui

“TRI=NITRO” is a music app using iOS sensors. It enables participant to discover and select their favorite playing styles of musical instruments during a musical performance. In addition, it has a wireless P2P communication function that synchronizes musical scale and BPM between multiple iOS devices. Built-in sensors of the smartphones have a lot of potential for making unique musical expression. However, we usually don’t particularly think about these hidden sensors (e.g.magnetometer, accelerometer, brightness, compass…) while using musical apps. In “TRI=NITRO” app design, I focused on these black box sensors. In this improvisational performance, performers use four iOS devices and “TRI=NITRO” apps.

POWDER BOX – Yoshihito Nakanishi

A modular synthesizer system, “POWDER BOX” is equipped with sensor-based replaceable interfaces, which enable participants to discover and select their favorite playing styles of musical instruments during a musical performance. In addition, it has a wireless communication function that synchronizes musical scale and BPM between multiple devices. Performers can control sounds like “mixing multiple types of powders”. In this improvisational performance, the performer uses seven “POWDER BOX” devices.
